Support Group Facilitator

Volunteer Position Description
Breast Cancer Network of Strength is seeking breast cancer survivors or health care professionals to fill volunteer positions as peer support group facilitators. The volunteer will be responsible for organizing, managing and facilitating a Network of Strength peer support group in their community.
Responsibilities

Manage the process for Network of Strength support groups, including the use of facilitation techniques, as necessary, to manage the discussion, stay focused, maintain order, prevent doctor bashing

Recruit members for support group

Promote the group through public communication and local advertising

Maintain and promote an atmosphere of confidentiality within the group

Maintain and promote an atmosphere of safety within the group

Accurately assess level of the group, and lead the group toward providing peer to peer support

Identify and communicate privately to participants who should seek professional counseling
-
Maintain group records as outlined by the program’s quality assurance guidelines
-
Serve as an ambassador for Network of Strength programs and services to group participants, as well as promotes Network of Strength within the community

Adhere to the guidelines of Network of Strength’s petty cash policy
Requirements

Must be a breast cancer survivor, a minimum of one year out of treatment and not a member of a support group or a health care professional who works with breast cancer patients.

Must have successfully satisfied Network of Strength’s facilitator training requirements;

Active listening skills with ability to clarify or paraphrase for the group when necessary;

Good verbal skills;

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people

Ability to know when and how to effectively intervene with group

Bilingual (if facilitating a non-English speaking group)
